Food for picky eaters

What is good food for picky eaters? And what kind of food can a picky eater eat? This is most likely 2 questions that you have asked yourself when it’s time to cook at home. Especially when you have already tried a variety of dishes without any success.

Food For Picky Eaters : How to think!

We at POOW The Food Hero are in daily contact with parents struggling to get their picky eaters to eat. Here are 6 tips directly from parents who are in the same situation as you. Below you can also find 4 recipes that our users like.

1. Divide the flavors on the plate

When you divide the flavors on a plate, it makes it less overwhelming for your picky eater to try new foods and flavors. Separating the food on the plate works well in many cases. You can also buy a plate with clear borders to separate the food or serve food in different bowls or plates to keep the food separated.

2. Finger food is perfect for picky eaters

Children prefer finger foods because they can control the eating process in terms of pace and size of each bite. Turning “normal” food into finger food could, therefore, be a smart way for parents to introduce new food to their picky eaters.

3. The child needs to try each taste 7-8 times

This is a tricky challenge since children can be very determined about which foods they are comfortable eating. It’s essential not to force your child to eat but instead encourage them to take small bites. If you fail one day, try again in a couple of days.

4. Let the child participate in cooking

Involving your child in cooking and meal preparation can break down barriers between your picky eater and food. Through participation, your child will know what’s on the plate. You can, for example, let your child mix different ingredients, measure, and stir.

5. Let the child help choose the food

Involving your child in deciding what to eat is a smart way to give your child control over the mealtime situation. When your child knows what’s on the plate, it’s more likely that they will eat the food. In our app, POOW The Food Hero, you will find “The Nutrition Game,” where your child can build different meals and get involved in mealtime in a fun way. Read more here!

6. Serve healthy snacks

Serving healthy snacks is a smart way to get your picky eater to eat foods that are healthy and full of nutrition. By serving, for example, fresh fruit, yogurt, cheese, and veggie sticks with dip, your child will get some essential nutrients. This is extra important if your child is struggling with the bigger meals during the day.
