How to cure a picky eater?

We at POOW The Food Hero engage with parents on a daily basis, one of recurring subjects is “my child is not eating”. This can of course create a lot of worry. But you as a parent can make an impact on the mealtime situation.  Eating habits are formed early in life and as a parent, you can start working on your child’s taste palette before the age of 1 by giving them taste portions with different flavors (bitter, sour, sweet, umami, etc).

Cure a picky eater & Nutriton

Children need a lot of nutrition in relation to energy, which means that the food they eat should be nutrient-dense as their portions are smaller than those of adults. It is important to know that food portions do not increase at the same rate as children get older as they do during the first year of life. This is because the child does not grow as fast as before. As a parent, you should therefore not be too worried if you notice that the amount of food does not increase over a period.

It is important for the child’s development to meet both nutritional and energy needs, but how do you know what is an appropriate portion? Here are 6 tips to keep in mind when your child is not eating.

1. Let the child decide

Studies show that children consume an appropriate amount of food over time if they are allowed to determine the amount themselves.

2. Tech the child about fullness

It is educational for the child if you can tech them to sense hunger and fullness. By teaching the child, they and can adjust their food intake accordingly.

3. Let the child serve themselves

By letting your child serve themselves food, you give the child the chance to be in control over the mealtime.  It is even better if you turn it into a daily habit.

4. Focus on the nutrition

What matters most is that the food offered to the child is varied and nutritious, then individual meals can be uniform. Focus on the nutrition intake for a full day, rather than a specific meal.

5. Mix it up

If you as a parent notice that it is becoming a little monotonous for a period, it may be good to vary breakfast, snacks, and food accompaniments.
